Foot Surgery Recovery: Six Things That Can Speed Things Up

Foot Surgery Recovery: Six Things That Can Speed Things Up

Foot surgery can range from minor surgery like corn removal to major surgery like hammertoe foot surgery. A common requirement for all types of foot surgery is a recovery period. Depending on how you take care of your foot after surgery, the recovery period could be smooth and fast, or it might take longer.

Here are some tips to ensure your foot surgery recovery is as fast as possible.

Get enough rest

After foot surgery, you might be itching to get back on your feet. Foot specialists warn that getting back on your feet too soon can slow down or even interrupt the healing process. During recovery, the foot has to heal and needs time for rehabilitation so it can function as well or even better than it did before the surgery.

Elevate your foot often

After surgery, you might experience some pain and numbness due to fluid buildup in the tissue surrounding the healing area. Frequently elevating your feet reduces the pressure that fluid buildup causes.

Apply ice packs

Applying an ice pack offers relief from inflammation and pain. If you still have a dressing, you can use the ice pack directly since the dressing will protect the skin from direct contact with the ice. If the dressing is off, wrap the ice pack in a light cloth and then apply it to the healing area as often as necessary throughout the day.

Take a load off

Your podiatrists will likely tell you not to put much weight on the affected foot/feet. They might prescribe, a post-operative shoe. Ensure you follow these guidelines so your foot/feet do not experience excessive pressure, a factor that can prevent progressive and complete healing.

Maintain a clean and dry surgery area

If you have bandages or a cast, make sure to keep them clean and dry throughout the recovery period. Your podiatrist will give you special waterproof covers to keep the area dry. Also, avoid going out with the area exposed as dust and dirt can quickly turn it into a breeding ground for bacteria, which can easily cause infection.

Integrate light exercises and physiotherapy

Although you need to rest, set aside some time to do some light exercises like light stretches and low-intensity physiotherapy. By keeping your affected foot in motion, you can ensure it does not become stiff, a factor that can make it challenging to resume normal movement once the recovery period is over.

Recovery from foot surgery is an essential step in rehabilitating the foot in readiness for daily use and activities. Follow the steps above and any other instructions your podiatrist gives to ensure your recovery process runs smoothly and quickly. In case the recovery period takes longer than expected, or you experience ongoing pain or bleeding, notify your foot specialist immediately.
