The Most Common Foot Problems You Can Experience This Spring
Spring weather makes a lot of us want to become more mobile after spending the winter bundled up inside our homes. The more we get out and about, the greater the risk that we may experience foot problems. By tasking a few precautions we can enjoy the warmth and sunshine of spring and enjoy good foot health as well.
Common Foot Problems You Can Experience This Spring
- Foot Pain
If you want to go out for a walk, make sure that you are wearing proper shoes that support your feet. Super-flat shoes, like ballet slippers, are not recommended, since they don’t provide any support for your feet, leading to foot pain. Your ankle can turn in or out too much while wearing them.
Flip-flops also don’t provide any support. They are fine for short errands but shoes like this stretch the plantar fascia, the tissue that covers the bottom of your foot, and can lead to plantar fasciitis. This is an inflammation of the tissue.
Invest in a good pair of walking shoes if you plan to be standing or walking for a long time. You’ll want shoes with flexible soles that also support your instep.
Pointy-toed shoes can pinch your feet and toes and lead to bunions and hammertoes. Look for shoes that have plenty of room for your toes to move while you are wearing them.
- Foot Fungus
When trimming your toenails, leave the cuticle alone. It is the seal that protects your toes from bacteria and fungus. If the seal is broken, you are exposing your feet to toenail fungus and other types of problems. Wash your feet regularly and make sure you dry them thoroughly, paying special attention to the area between the toes. Apply powder before putting on socks.
- Ingrown Toenails
Be sure to trim your toenails regularly. They should always be trimmed straight across the toe. Trimming them unevenly can lead to ingrown toenails, where part of the nail becomes embedded in the skin along the nail bed. This condition can be quite painful and may become infected if not treated promptly by a podiatrist.
