What is Shockwave for Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis, also known as heel spur syndrome, is a common form of pain in the foot. This condition causes intense pain in the heel that can be felt each time you walk, particularly first thing in the morning or after sitting for long periods of time. This pain occurs as inflammation develops on the tissue found on the bottom of your foot.

While there are many common causes for this condition such as your age, body size, and even the type of exercise you complete on a regular basis, treatment for this condition can vary. While medications and various physical therapies may be available, for more severe conditions, shockwave therapy may be recommended.

What is Shockwave Therapy for Plantar Fasciitis?

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive form of treatment. It does not involve any type of surgery or long recovery periods. With this option, shock waves are given in a short series. These can be high-energy shockwaves or quite low waves of energy. It is believed that the shockwaves affect the tissue in the heels, helping to stimulate healing.

Is Shockwave Therapy Painful?

While shockwave therapy does not involve any surgical procedure, there may be some discomfort. In some cases, you may experience bruising and swelling following the treatment.

Can I Receive Shockwave Therapy?

This form of treatment is not ideal for every individual. Patients who are pregnant, have bleeding disorders, infections, as well as young children may not qualify to receive this treatment. However, if you continue to experience plantar fasciitis and have unsuccessfully tried to treat the condition with other options, you should talk to your podiatrist to determine if shockwave therapy is for you.

You should not live life in pain. To learn more about shockwave therapy and various treatment options for plantar fasciitis, schedule an appointment with your Toronto Podiatrist Sheldon H. Nadal D.P.M. today.
