Having Foot Pain? Call a Podiatrist!

If a part of your body hurts, you can be sure that you will find a doctor who specializes in treating that part. Whether it is your brain, your heart, your eyes, your ears – there is an expert out there who can help you. If you are having problems with your feet and ankles, you can rely on foot specialists called podiatrists to take care of it.

Podiatrists perform many of the same procedures other doctors do, including taking X-rays, prescribing drugs, and performing surgery. They also deal with issues that your primary doctor might not focus on, like checking the way you walk and prescribing shoe inserts!

When Should You See a Podiatrist

You may feel it is only right to visit your family practitioner when you need treatment for a foot condition. Then you’d be surprised when your doctor refers you to a podiatrist. Most general practitioners agree that if you have a specific foot problem, it is best that you see someone with special training in this area – a podiatrist!

However, if your podiatrist has reason to believe that a serious condition like peripheral arterial disease or diabetes is showing its symptoms first in your feet, he or she may recommend that you be checked by an internist.

What Do You Have to Keep in Mind When Looking for a Podiatrist?

Here are some helpful tips to help you when you are planning to see a podiatrist for a foot problem:

Find a  podiatrist who you can be comfortable with. You want someone who will answer all your questions, take the time to explain things to you and educate you with everything you need to know about the problem you have.

Ask about credentials. Podiatrists also have areas of expertise. You’ll want someone experienced in your specific problem, more so if it’s something more serious that could involve a surgery or an extensive treatment plan.

Wear the shoes you regularly wear. Your podiatrist would like to see the shoes that you usually have on, especially if the problem you have involves heel pain or problems regarding your foot structure. Your shoes can provide your podiatrist with a good idea as to what could be causing your foot problem.

Remember that your feet are among the most abused parts of your body and it deserves attention. Do not just ignore any feeling of discomfort or pain. When your foot hurts, call a podiatrist like Sheldon Nadal, DPM!
