Podiatrists are the Answer to your Foot Problems

Our bodies are complex structures comprising numerous bones, muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, nerves, blood, and other soft tissues so it’s not surprising that things go wrong. Structurally, perfection is unlikely because everyone’s genetic make-up is a hybrid, and functionally, every movement we make affects another part of our body.

So, when something goes wrong with your body, you have to deal with it. Take bunions for example; these are actually hereditary, but because of medical advances, there are many options available to treat them.

Bunions form at the base of the big toe joints when the big toes drift outward toward the smaller toes and the tendons tighten causing the big toe joints to stick out toward the midline of the body. This structural change can be exacerbated by high heeled, narrow, slip-on, or pointed-toe shoes and arthritis often develops in the damaged joints. There may be a heredity component.

The resulting stiffness and pain in your joints affects the way you walk and may cause you to claw your toes for stability. This structural change also results in a wider forefoot so you will feel pressure across your toe joints from shoes that are not wide enough.

If this pressure continues, you may develop another form of bunion—a bunionette—a bump that forms on the outside of the joint at the base of your smallest toe. This is also known as a tailor’s bunion because it commonly affected tailors who spent many hours sitting cross-legged on the floor.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. Schedule an appointment with Sheldon H. Nadal, D.P.M., a Toronto-based podiatrist, to manage your bunions and bunionettes either conservatively, with soft padding, or with custom-made insoles (orthotics) which stabilize the condition and improve function. He can also provide footwear advice and may suggest exercises or night splints.

If conservative treatment is unsuccessful, there are many surgical options available. Sheldon H. Nadal has many years of experience with minimally invasive foot surgery which can correct your bunions or bunionettes with minimal down time.
