Why You Might Need To Wear Orthotics

Our feet are literally the foundation for the rest of our body. They support our entire body weight thus it is important to take care of them and make sure that they are properly supported at all times.

There are, however, some situations that require extra support for the feet. Here are several situations that might require orthotics:

Fallen Arches

Orthotics do not necessarily correct a fallen arch, but they can reposition structures in the foot to improve its biomechanical function as well as reduce chances of injury. There are, however, some conditions that contribute to or aggravated by a fallen arch:

Plantar Fasciitis – The plantar fascia connects the heel bone to the toes and it also supports the arch of our feet. If it becomes weak, swollen, strained or irritated, you will feel pain in the heel when you stand or walk.

Hallux Valgus – This is commonly referred to as a bunion. It is a deformity at the base of the big toe in which it points towards or deviates from the lesser toes. This also causes muscle imbalances within the joints of the toes.

Arthritis – Osteoarthritis occurs due to “wear and tear”. It affects the smooth, gliding surface of the joints, also known as cartilage. As

this wears out, it can contribute to inflammation and pain.

Ongoing Foot Pain

It is important to have a thorough assessment to be able to rule out particular issues. When those issues have been ruled out, orthotics can now be beneficial by removing pressure as well as stress from painful areas.

Diabetes

If you are suffering from diabetes, then you also have an increased risk of corns and calluses – especially if your foot alignment has been altered. These corns and calluses, if left untreated, can result in diabetic wounds. Orthotics can be used to help relive the key pressure areas of the foot.

Prolonged Standing Time

If your job requires you to spend long periods of time standing, then you will definitely need extra support. Your muscles will be exhausted without support. It is also important to move around and make sure to give your feet a break. In situations like this, you will surely benefit from orthotics.
