Healthy Feet Tips for New Runners

Warm weather turns the mind to using that weather to exercise rather than being walled off in a gym, sometimes through cycling, or swimming, but more often through running.  Running is a fantastic way to get and stay fit.  It burns fat, builds muscle, and increases stamina.  It can also be a lot of fun, and beating the distances and times of previous runs can be personally rewarding.  If you’re thinking about trying running, here are some important things you should know about how to keep your feet healthy, since healthy feet means better running.

  • Get the Right Shoes – Spend some quality time at the shoe store with some knowledgeable staff.  Getting the right fit is of paramount importance.  You may need to find a brand that offers multiple widths, or a deeper shoe if you depend on orthotics.  Take a look at your other shoes as well – your perfect running shoes won’t do you any good if you’re being pinched by your high heels or your loafers at work.
  • Keep Your Feet Soft and Dry – A quality moisturizer applied immediately after a bath or shower can prevent painful cracking caused by dry feet.  On the opposite end of the spectrum, sweaty feet can be a breeding ground for fungal infection—try lightweight moisture-wicking socks to cut down on swampy feet.
  • Watch Your Form – As with most other exercises good form is crucial in running for preventing injury.  If you are like most people, make sure to keep your eyes forward, your feet pointed straight ahead, and land midfoot, not on toes or heels, or you could develop shin pain or other problems.

Running with a little preparation and knowledge can be quite rewarding.  Of course, injuries, infections, and other foot issues can arise even when the best preemptive measures are taken.  If you have any foot problems arising from running, or perhaps, preventing you from running, it would be best for you contact a professional for help.  Schedule a visit with Toronto Podiatrist, Sheldon H.
