Is The Recovery Process After Minimally Invasive Surgery Lengthy?

If you are considering or have been told that you need to undergo minimally invasive surgery on one or both feet, one of the questions you probably have is whether the recovery process is lengthy. You will no doubt want to be able to make arrangements to take time off work or school and/or to get help with childcare, if appropriate.

Recovery Process After Minimally Invasive Surgery

If the minimally invasive surgery involves cutting into a bone in the foot, such as a procedure to correct a bunion, you can expect that your foot will take about six weeks to heal. This is the amount of time it takes for the bone be on its way to healing.

You may need to plan to take some time off work to recover. The exact amount will depend on the type of surgery you are undergoing and the type of work you do. You will receive instructions before your procedure.

Walking After Bunion Surgery

In many instances, you will be able to walk immediately following bunion surgery. Your foot will be bandaged after the procedure and you will need to wear a special surgical sandal to protect the bone. The dressing gets changed on a weekly basis by the Podiatrist and is usually discontinued after six weeks.

You will be able to move your big toe joint immediately following the surgery. The sooner you start the move your toe, the better. It will help to prevent stiffness following the surgery.

Foot Appearance After Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimally invasive surgery will leave a series of small scars. Over time, these will heal to leave barely noticeable marks on the skin. Once fully healed, there will be minimal scarring on the foot.
