The Worst Types of Shoes for your Feet

Your feet take a lot of pounding during the day. Whether you are walking, running, or standing, they have to hold up your body weight for however long we are upright. When you don’t make good choices about footwear and decide to wear the worst types of shoes for your feet, it only compounds the problem.

Worst Types of Shoes for your Feet

  • High Heels

This is the worst choice for your feet, since this style holds the foot at an abnormal angle and strains you feet and back while you are wearing them. The higher and narrower the heel, the better the chance that you may twist your foot or ankle and suffer a sprain or a hairline fracture.

If you wear this style to work on a regular basis, try to rest your feet when you are at your desk. Take your shoes off and do some simple foot exercises. Place some cushioning insoles in the shoes to make them a bit more comfortable. Stress fractures and Achilles tendon injuries are not uncommon while wearing this type of shoe, so be alert for foot and heel pain.

  • Flip Flops

You may think that because flip flops are flat, they are a good choice in footwear. Since they are comfortable, people tend to wear them often, especially during the summer months. They are easy to put on and wear when you are running errands, spending the day with friends, or heading for the beach or the pool.

The issue with flip flops from a foot health point of view is that they don’t offer any level of arch support for your feet. They are also completely open footwear and don’t provide any type of protection from hazards like falling objects, hot liquids or harmful chemicals. You could end up with a chronic foot problem like tendonitis or plantar fasciitis from wearing this style too often.

Are you wondering how your shoes measure up when it comes to foot health? Bring them with you to your appointment with Toronto podiatrist Sheldon H. Nadal D. P. M. He will be able to tell you whether you are wearing the right shoes and if orthotics would help you feel more comfortable when you walk.
