Tips for Choosing the Right Size Ski and Snowboard Boots for Foot Health

Skiing and snowboarding are great ways to keep fit and have fun in the winter. Your feet and ankles act as shock absorbers and brakes when you travel down the slopes on skis, and the right pair of boots will make sure they are protected. Snowboard boots need to be snug-fitting but not so tight that they cause pain.

How to Choose the Right Size Ski and Snowboard Boots for Foot Health

  • Consider length and width of boots when making a decision to buy.

Not only do you want boots that fit well lengthwise, but you also want to make sure that you choose ones that are wide enough for your foot. Ski boots are available in several widths. You should be able to wiggle your toes in a new pair of snowboard boots.

  • Wear the right socks when shopping for boots.

When shopping for ski boots, wear a thin pair of socks. You will have plenty of insulation from the shell of the boots when you are out on the slopes, and thin socks will give you more control and response while operating your skis.

Be sure to choose a type that will pull moisture away from your feet; otherwise, you are more likely to experience cold or chafing. Avoid wearing 100 percent cotton socks for winter sports; they will hold moisture against your body and can cause blisters.

  • Take orthotics with you when looking for ski and snowboard boots.

If you wear orthotics, or custom shoe inserts, take them with you when you are trying on boots. Make a point of trying on several different models. Wear them around the shop to get an idea of how they might feel when you have them on for several hours at a time.

  • Wear new boots at home before you hit the slopes.

Before you head out skiing or snowboarding, wear your new boots at least a few times around the house. It will allow your feet to become accustomed to them.

Enjoy skiing and snowboarding this winter. If you experience any discomfort in your feet or ankles after one of these activities or are concerned about whether your boots fit properly, arrange an appointment with Toronto podiatrist Sheldon H. Nadal D.P.M. for a consultation.
