How to Manage Arthritis Foot Pain

Arthritis is a catch-all term used to describe a number of diseases affecting the joints. It means "joint inflammation" and causes swelling, pain and stiffness in the joints and soft tissues in the body. In many types of arthritis, joint deterioration occurs and the cushioning provided by the cartilage in the joints is gradually lost. When this occurs, the bones rub together and wear against each other. The soft tissues also begin to wear down. Arthritis can be quite painful and can result in loss of joint function, as well as deformities in affected joints. There are ways you can manage arthritis foot pain to make you more comfortable.

How to Manage Arthritis Foot Pain

•   When you are looking for shoes, make sure that they are wide enough so that you can wiggle your toes with ease. Avoid shoes with high heels since they tend to put more pressure on the balls of your feet.

When you are looking for shoes, make sure that they are wide enough in the foot that you can wiggle your toes with ease. Don't choose anything with high heels; they tend to put more pressure on the balls of your feet. You need to wear shoes that have good arch supports to stabilize the joints in your feet. Athletic shoes are a good choice, since they have good, stable soles.

•   Try over-the-counter pain medications.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) like naproxen or ibuprofen can help to reduce the swelling and pain of arthritis. Always take them according to directions and let your doctor know that you are taking them.

•   Massage your feet

You can try doing this yourself or have your partner do it for you. Use lotion to help your hands slide more easily over the skin on your feet. Massage your toes as well as the balls of your feet.

•   Use an orthotic device.

Consult a podiatrist to find out whether a brace, cane or shoe insert will provide pain relief. Shoe inserts can correct misalignments in your feet and ankles and distribute your weight more evenly over the bottom of your feet. You can get advice about whether having them custom-made would be to your advantage.
