Geriatric Foot Care: How Seniors Can Take Good Care of their Feet

Good foot care is important for people of any age, but it becomes especially important for seniors. The longer you are able to keep them healthy, more longer you will be able to enjoy an active lifestyle, which is so important to your overall health and well-being. Here are some suggestions to help you take good care of your feet.

Geriatric Foot Care Tips

1.Practice proper foot hygiene by washing your feet daily.

Use a mild soap and pay special attention to the area between your toes when cleaning your feet. Dry your feet thoroughly to avoid infections like athlete's foot.

2.Make sure your feet stay clean and dry.

Don't wear the same pair of shoes two days in a row. It's a good idea to buy shoes with removable insoles. Taking them out makes it easier to make sure that you dry your shoes at night. Change your socks or hose every day as well.

3.Inspect your feet regularly.

If you need assistance, ask a family member or a friend for help. Small cuts and sores can become infected if left untreated. It's not uncommon to have reduced circulation or nervous sensation in the feet, which means that regular visual inspections are vital.

4.Trim nails straight across to help prevent ingrown toenails.

Don't cut the nails too short. Be sure to file down any sharp edges on the nails. If the nails become abnormally thick or discoloured, these signs can indicate that a fungal infection is present and you should consult a podiatrist.

5.Wear shoes that support your feet appropriately.

Orthopedic walking shoes are a good choice and provide a good level of support. Avoid wearing shoes that are narrow across the toes or which don't have good arch support. Make sure that they fit properly and have enough room for the socks you usually wear.
