Toronto foot specialist criticizes California restaurant's dress code requiring high heels for women

According to Fox News, a new 1920's themed restaurant/club called ProAbition has opened in Riverside California and requires all women patrons to wear high heeled shoes in the club.

The flyer read "Ladies: No flat shoes or sandals. Must have heels. Exceptions will be made if injured".

After a lot of negative feedback, Christopher Silvestro, the restaurant's Assistant General Manager, flip flopped on the policy saying that women will be allowed to enter as long as they don't wear flip flops or sandals.

This Toronto podiatrist is concerned that such policies can lead to injuries for women. When a woman is in a high heeled shoe, her ankle is in an unstable position and is prone to sprains. In addition, wearing high heels for a long period can cause shortening of the calf muscles which can also affect the mechanics of their feet. High heels also put excessive pressure at the front of the foot. This can aggravate pre-existing problems such as bunions, hammertoes and calluses or dropped metarsals at the bottom of the ball of the foot.

In my Toronto podiatry office I recommend that women try to wear high heeled shoes for relatively short periods of time. When they have to do a lot of walking they should wear comfortable shoes.

If you or a friend have foot problems such as Bunions, Hammertoes Corns and Bone Spurs or calluses, please call my Toronto podiatry office for a consultation to find out how we can relieve your pain.

Now that we know the restaurant's fashion policy, I can't wait to find out if the food is good. If they make me wear high heels, I'm not going, no matter how good the food.
