What your feet reveal about your health

On July 28  2011 Elizabeth Rogers posted an article online describing how your feet can reflect the state of your health. I was fortunate enough to have my professional opinions quoted in the article.

We discussed several foot problems that I see in my Toronto podiatry office including:

Thick yellow nails that may be due to a fungus infection. In the past they were treated with topical medications, which were not very effective, and pills, which could have harmful side effects. In  August 2010 I began treating onychomycosis or fungal toenails with a 1320 nm  YAG laser, which does not have the side effects associated with the oral medications. To date, the vast majority of my patients who have had the laser nail treatment have been extremely satisfied. Unlike other offices, who only perform one treatment, we perform three full treatments on the affected nails to increase the rate of success. Painful foot deformities such as bunions, hammertoes, corns and bone spurs which can be treated permanenly using modern minimally invasive techniques. I treat bunions and other problems in the comfort of my office, painlessly, under local anesthetic. For more information on bunion surgery, click on http://www.footcare.net/bunions.html

Heel pain, arch pain and plantar fasciitis. These are very common problems which are often related to each otherand may cause significant pain with the first few steps when getting out of bed in the morning  and following rest. She correctly states that this may be a mechanical problem which can improve with supportive footware and orthotics and stretching exercises. In the past, to relieve the pain associated with these conditions we could only use anti-inflammatory pills (which are hard on the somach, blood pressure and heart), and cortisone injections (which can weaken the connective tissue). Instead, we can now use sound waves such as extracorporeal shock waves http://www.footcare.net/shock-wave-therapy.html, pressure waves or radial waves (also referred to as radial shock waves) and low energy laser light.
