Questions and Answers About Orthotics

Questions and Answers About Orthotics

Orthotics are inserts you wear in your shoes to treat a variety of issues, ranging from foot pain to back problems. But not all types of orthotics are the same. So, how do you know you need them? Good question. Below are some questions and answers about orthotics to help you decide if they are right for you.

What are the signs you can benefit from orthotics?

Orthotics can help treat various foot conditions. Signs and symptoms you may benefit from orthotics include:

  • Heel pain
  • Bunions
  • Arch pain
  • Back or hip discomfort
  • Leg soreness

Are all orthotics the same?

All orthotics are not created equally. Some inserts are sold over the counter. But we all have different feet and various foot problems. Customized foot orthotics may be a better option. Customized orthotics are prescribed for someone based on their foot problems, height, weight, and activity level. After an appointment with a foot specialist, an impression of the feet is made, and the customized orthotics are made.

Do orthotics help flat feet?

Orthotics can help several problems, including flat feet. In some instances, flat feet can lead to foot or ankle pain. Using orthotics may correct the problem by improving the position of the feet.

Can orthotics help foot pain?

One of the main benefits of using orthotics is reducing foot pain. Orthotics provide support and cushioning to the feet, which may decrease pain. Also, orthotics help place the feet in a better position, which may decrease foot pain.

Does orthotics help back pain?

Foot problems can lead to pain in the hips and back. Poor foot alignment and foot mechanics place additional stress on the knees and hips. Eventually, it can also lead to back pain. By correcting problems with foot mechanics through orthotics, back pain might also improve.

Can orthotics feel uncomfortable at first?

Custom orthotics realign the position of your feet. Although the orthotics correct problems, you may feel pressure in parts of your feet that you did not feel before. You will get used to the orthotics in a few weeks as they do their job correcting misalignments.

Do I have to wear a certain type of shoe with orthotics?

Orthotics work best in shoes with enclosed heels and a low to moderate heel height.

Will insurance cover the cost of orthotics?

The cost of orthotics varies. Customized orthotics are typically more expensive than over the counter products. In some cases, your insurance company may pay for the prescribed orthotics. But keep in mind, health insurance coverage varies greatly. If the cost is an issue, check with your insurance provider before choosing orthotics.

How long do I have to wear orthotics?

There is no set timeframe for wearing orthotics. The amount of time you need to wear them depends on the condition being treated. In some cases, such as heel pain, when the condition improves, you may not need to continue to wear the orthotics. After the condition resolves, you might feel the orthotics are no longer needed.

But in other instances, such as with chronic foot problems, your foot specialist may advise you to consistently wear your orthotics. If you are unsure about how long to wear your orthotics, talk to your foot specialist.
