How orthotics can help your feet

How Orthotics Can Help Your Feet

Orthotics are shoe inserts that may be sold over the counter or are custom fit for an individual. Orthotics are used to treat a large variety of foot problems.

The purpose of an orthotic is to support the feet and put them into the correct position that decreases pain. Orthotics may help in several ways. The best type of orthotics may depend on the type of foot problem being treated.

What conditions can orthotics help?

Orthotics may be part of a treatment plan for various feet problems, including the following:

Bunions: Bunions involve bumps that form at the base of the big toe, leading to a structural deformity. Orthotics may help decrease pressure on the toe.

Flat feet: Flat feet can sometimes lead to ankle and foot pain. Using orthotics provides support to the feet and improves foot position.

Heel spurs: Heel spurs involve excess growth of the bone on the heel. Orthotics may reduce pain and support the foot.

Plantar fasciitis: Plantar fasciitis involves irritation and inflammation of the tissue that runs across the bottom of the heel. Orthotics may help support the heel and decrease pain.

High arches: High arches may contribute to various conditions, including knee pain, shin splints, and heel pain. Orthotics may keep the feet from rolling too much outward or inward.

But it is not just problems with the feet that orthotics may help. Orthotics may also alleviate back pain in some people. When you have pain in one part of the body, such as the feet, it can have a domino effect. Discomfort in one area may change the way you move and lead to problems in other parts of the body.

That is what can happen with issues involving the feet. Feet problems may lead to issues with the hips and back. Orthotics may help realign the feet into a better position, which may affect posture and gait, and in turn, improve conditions, such as back pain.

Ways that orthotics may help

Orthotics are often part of an overall treatment plan for various feet problems. Orthotics may help in several ways. For example, orthotics may correct the foot position and provide arch support. Orthotics also provide cushioning to specific parts of the feet, such as the ball of the foot. Certain types of orthotics may also be recommended to alleviate back pain or reduce pain during sports, such as running or basketball.

By providing cushioning, support, and putting the foot in a better position, orthotics may ease pain and improve functioning. In some cases, orthotics, along with other treatments, help someone to avoid invasive treatment, including surgery.

Types of orthotics

Different types of orthotics are available. The type that is best for you may depend on the problem you are treating. Below are the most common forms of orthotics.

Insoles: Insoles sold over the counter are not individually customized. They may include arch supports that are worn to correct flat feet. They may be helpful to treat minor problems but are typically not your best bet. Although they are less expensive than custom made orthotics, it might take trial and error and buying different types to find the right ones.

Customized: Customized orthotics are prescribed for an individual based on several factors. A certain style is usually recommend based on a person’s foot problem, weight, height, and level of activity. For instance, a runner may require different orthotics than someone that is less active.

Orthotics may be prescribed after a review of symptoms and a medical exam. An impression or mold of your feet is taken to create an orthotic specifically designed for each individual.

Foot problems, such as hammer tow, plantar fasciitis, and bunions, are very common. These conditions can cause quite a bit of discomfort. Fortunately, orthotics are often a helpful part of a treatment plan to decrease pain and improve functioning.
